Holden's cap

And here is the next challenge for you!
What do you know about Holden's red hunting cap? Where has he got it? How does he like wearing it? What does he try to express by wearing it that way, in your opinion?

  1. J.D. Salinger, in his coming-of-age novel The Catcher in the Rye, repeatedly uses Holden Caufield's red hunting hat as a symbol to show Holden's growth from a young man terrified of becoming an adult to one who begins to accept that he must be able to live in an imperfect world.

In the beginning of the story, Holden introduces the hat as being red and floppy, and he purchases it in a store in New York when the fencing team traveled to the big city. In this part of the story, Holden wants to connect with Allie and does so by wearing on a red hunting hat, which is a connection to his brother's red hair.

Another reason Holden bought the hat to guard him from the cold outside world. When he left the bar, the lady who checked his coat told him to put on the hat because it was cold outside and his hair was all wet. Holden uses the hat for protection against pneumonia when he walks down to the park.

Towards the end of the novel, Holden starts to lose his mental need for the red hat. He gives it to Phoebe because he wants her to be protected against the adult world, but she returns the hat to Holden

  2. Matej, your mark for the literary test is going up rapidly. Congratulations!
And what does Holden want to express when he wears the hat with the shield turned backwards?
Have you ever worn it that way too?

  3. hmmmmm I am not sure about that. I think it's something in conection with his personality, but I'm not sure.. hard to say
Well I must say that I'm not big fan of any hats or caps. I never wear it, even it's cold outside. I have a kind of strange feeling, so I don't like it at all. But when I was a child, I wore it, just beacuse my mom forced me to.

  4. Hello Mrs. Hladnik. How did you spend the weekend? I went with my friends skiing in Obertauern.

Holden bought the red hat by himself.
Holden wears the hat with the shild turned backwards. The red hunting hat shows that Holden desires to be different from everyone around him. Holden uses the hat as a mark of individuality and indenpendence.

In Pg. 191 he says: "My hunting hat really gave me quite a lot of protection".

  5. Tanja, did you do some tour skiing in Austria?
It must have been fantastic although there are serious warnings against possible avalanches. I am afraid of them terribly as I have already been in one on Rodica above Bohinj. But so far I have survived! We just went tour-skiing on Baba above Dovje which is believed to be avalanche-free.
You are right that Holden's way of wearing the hat turned backwards shows his in a way troublesome and defying, stubborn character.
Whenever he disagrees with the society and its principles, he turns the hat with its shield backwards.
Tanja, congratulations as you are rapidly bettering your mark in English literature!

  6. Yes, Mrs Hladnik I did some freeride skiing in Austria. Also I am afraid of possible avalanches, but in Freeapproved club, we are very careful about avalanches. I believe that tour-skiing on Baba above Dovje was fantastic.
Today I went tour-skiing on Turški žleb-Okrešelj. It was very windy and cold. There was also one Croatian group, but on the half of the way they turned back, because there was serious warnings against possible avalanches. On TV I heard the news that two young boys died because of avalances and therefore I was very sad.
I spent very exciting holidays and I think also you did.
