Who is SHE?

She put her hands around my neck and all. She is very affectionate.
I mean she is quite affectionate for a child. I sort of gave her a kiss ...
She was glad as hell to see me.

Can you guess who is "she" in this short excerpt from the novel. What else is typical of her character. What present has Holden bought for her? And how does she show she would do anything for Holden?

You can have a look at the film clip about Holden, played by the late River Phonix.

  1. I think that "she" is Phoebe.
She is Holden's ten year old sister. She more or less adores her brothers. It isn't real adoration, but she likes horsing around and being around them. D.B. isn't home, so she uses his room beacuse it is bigger the her own. She is mature for her age. She is also nice dancer and Holden can talk to her as long as he wants to and she'll listen and understandh him. Or at least make him belive she does.
I only remember, that he bought her a CD with her favorite grup. But after the accident, he broke the CD.
Phoebe was very nice to him. When he came home, his parent weren't there only Phoebe was. She was very happy to see him and he was also without any money, so she gave him Christmas savings. She also wouldn't told her parents that Holden was in his room, beacuse he ran away.

  2. Yes, you are right, it's Phoebe.
Though Holden has bought her a record, not a CD, because in 1951, when this novel was published, CDs didn't exist yet.
Do you have any sibs, similar to Phoebe?
One day Phoebe comes with her suitcases. Why? Where is she going to?

  3. Yes yes of course... in that times CD didn't exist yet. My mistake...
Yes i have one sister Maja. She is 20 years old and attending medical fax in Jesenice. But I don't belive, that she is similar to Phoebe. She will never gave me her savings, or anything like that.
-Phoebe comes with her suitcases, beacuse she wants to go with Holden. She really loves him and she would do anything for him. But Holden didn't want to take her with him, and she was very sad. I think that they went to ZOO so they could talk to each other.
-and btw Urša is not helping me with my answers, even we are dating. She is to lazy for anything like that... =)

  4. Firs I congratulate you two on dating each other. I wish you will be always happy together!
But it's true that Urša has been a bit lazier lately, so I believe she is not helping you. I was just teasing you although I know you can write (of course if sb. can decipher your hanwright!) and speak good English.
Now let's go back to the novel.
What does Holden do with the dirty words he comes across on the walls close to Phoebe's school? Who does he try to protect?

  5. In this short excerpt from the novel is Phoebe (pg. 146).She likes to sleep in D.B. room's when he's away and he lets her. She doesn't like her own room because it's little. She says she likes to spread out. She's very good in all her subjects, but she's best in spelling. She has about thousand notebooks. She was also a very good dancer. She really gets something on her mind when she gets something on her minds. She can be very snotty sometimes. She is also a very good listener. She always listens when you tell her something.
Holden dropped Phoebe's record. It broke into about fifty pieces. It was in a big envelope, but it broke anyway.
Phoebe wouldn't told her parents that Holden was in his room because he went to Mr. and Mrs. Antolini's house.

  6. Thank you very much. We will be together as long as possible. Yes clearly I can talk and write English, but I also know that my handwriting is horrible so I have to fix it.
-Holden did not want children to grow up because he felt that adults are corrupt. This is seen when Holden tries to erase naughty words from the walls of the elementary school, that his sister Phoebe attended. He was also arfaid that someone will explain to the children what it means

  7. Tanja, thank you for joining the blog.
Everything you have written, is right!
So Holden is in a way a protector of all the children.
When Holden pays a visit to his favourite teacher Antolini, something bad happens to him which caises another disappointent over the adults. Do you happen to know what it is?

  8. Tnank you Mrs Hladnik for responding to me.
Holden falls asleep at Antolinis. But suddenly he wakes up. Holden believes that Mr. Antolini is making homosexual advanced to him, but Mr. Antolini claims it was nothing. When something perverty like that happens, Holden starts sweating and shaking. That kind of stuff's happened to him about twenty times since he was a kid. He can't stand it any more.

  9. Tanja, yes, you have answered in the way Holden has seen or percieved the event with Mr Antolini. We will never know what actually happened, but we have learned Holden's character even better: he hates perverts, the real and the imaginary ones. And he finds nobody to rely on or to talk openly to in this "vaccuum time" before facing his parents.
Tanja, there is another task awaiting you. Good luck!
