Chequers

In the novel the boardgame Chequers is mentioned several times.
Can you remember in what connection?
What details does Holden recall regarding this game?

  1. Chaquers is mentioned in connection with Jane. Jane is Holden's friend, who he remembers when his roomate Staedtler tells him he is going on a date with her. Holden then often remembers her and how they played Chequers a lot.

Jane Gallagher plays checkers with Holden. He recalls details such as Jane being very good at playing checkers. Holden can't forget that she always kept kings in the last now.

  3. Hello mrs. Hladnik, how are you today? I have finaly found your blog :))

'In the novel the boardgame Chequers is mentioned several times.

    - Checkers is mentioned in connection with Jane Gallagher, an old friend of Holden's, with whom Stradler goes out for a date.
    - Holden wanted to know if Jane still keeps all her kings in the back row. When she'd get a king, she'd align it in the back row and leave it there, because she liked the way they looked when they were all in the back row.

And a reply to this question: 'Now I am interested which girl he socializes with a lot and why their relationship ends.'
    - Holden socialized with Jane Gallagher a lot during one of the summers, and he got pretty intimate with her, but not physically. They spent all summer together playing tennis and golf, so he had time to read her behavior like a book. He liked her very much, especially because Jane was into reading books and poetry, and she was the only person who he showed his brothers baseball mitt with written poems to.
    - Their relationship actually never really ended, because even though Holden wanted them to be more than just friends, she clearly wasn't thinking the same, as she dated a guy who was always trying to show his muscles, which annoyed Holden quite a lot. Looks like Jane and Holden didn't stay in touch after that summer, because Holden doesn't even know what high school she attended.

  4. Hello Mrs Hladnik! This is my next comment!

Besides Jane he,in his whole life, socializes the most with Sally Hayes. Holden knows her for a long time but does not like her as much as Jane. Sally knows quite a lot about plays and literature, so Holden finds out that she is not intelligent after a long time. (He thought she was smart at first but then he found that she is not.)She is very good looking.

  5. After seeing the Lunts, they went ice-skating. Then Holden invited her on some kind of road trip and she said that they should not do that. And he thought that they could live together but she refused the idea. Then Holden got really mad and started screaming at her and telling her that she gives him a royal pain in the ass. And she got really mad and after that Holden felt sorry for the mean things he said to her. He started apologizing but she wanted him to leave her alone and so he left the place without her.

  6. Hello professor, because I didn't write the Catcher in the rye I am now answering to the questions.

Boardgame Chequers is mentioned when Holden finds out that Stradlater's date is a girl named Jane. Jane Gallagher is a girl that Holden spent a lot of time when he was a child. They spent summer together and played Chequers on the porch. He remembers that she used to keep all the kings in the back row and wants to know if she still does that.

The girl that socializes with him and Holden had a relationship is Sally Hayes. Holden finds Sally very attractive, but he thinks that she is stupid. He went on a date with her that didn't end well. He considers Sally very phoney and even calls her "the queen of the phonies". That's way their relationship didn't last long.

  7. Professor Hladnik, I know a lot of people already answered the questions. Because you said that we can comment on the blog for not being present when we wrote Catcher in the rye here is my comment. If you have any more questions I would be gladly to answer them.

The person who is connected to the boardgame Chequers, as we all know is Jane, Holden friend. They were really close and they constantly hold hands. One night his roommate Stradlater mentions that he is going out with her. Holden doesn't like that and is irritated by that thought. That's when he remembers detail that she always had her kings in the back row.

For the girl that he socializes a lot I pick Sally. She was his girlfriend. When they met on a date after a long time he confess his love to her and shares his thought about running away with her. But the date doesn't go that well. Sally didn't like the idea and by the end of the night they both went their separate ways. Sally is very beautiful and Holden is attracted by her but he doesn't consider her very smart and doesn't like her being phoney. Probably that's the reason why they ended. I think he would be better if he dated Jane but sadley they remained just friends. She never appeared in the book and Holden just recalls memories about her.

  8. Girls, well done indeed!
Don't you think Holden is a kind of afraid that Jane might refuse him, so he seems relieved when he can't get her on the phone?

What is his attitude to religion, god, priests, nuns ...?
